Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Pennsylvania

police demanding social security numbers

After reporting vandalism to my truck to the police,

and giving him the what I would think, all the info needed

name ,address, phone number,my age and make and model of vehicle. He asked me for my social security number and I told him it was not available. He basically demanded that I give it to him because hes a cop, otherwise he couldnt file a police report and could find out the number anyway if he wanted to.I tried to be nice about this by telling him that its nothing personal, but just because you have a uniform on doesnt mean you cant be the biggest identity theft person on the planet. Do they have the right to this info and is there any legal recourse I can take?

Re: police demanding social security numbers

A police report can be filed without a social security number. There's no reason he needs it. It may even be a violation of the law for him to ask for it in that situation.

You should find out if it is a department policy to ask for the SS#, or whether he is just doing this on his own. If it's not department policy, perhaps you should make a complaint to his superiors.

You didn't say what happened after you refused to give the number. Did he refuse to file the report?
