Murder case(trial)

If a defendent doesn't have a lawyer and can't afford a lawyer when his trial date comes up, what would happen on that date?What would the judge do to him? He's been in jail for almost 2 years now and has had two paid attorneys. that

This should immediately go to the Public Defenders office to make sure that this person is represented at the time of trial and to ascertain why he has not been to trial yet.
