You asked about being emancipated when one is 18 years old.

It's a matter of law that a person is emancipated when they are 18 years old. Period. The paperwork for college is another story.

Basically your son will have to file an affidavit with his paperwork stating that his father is being an ass and is otherwise estranged from his child. Check with the financial aid office at the colleges he is looking at and see how exactly it should be handled now. They see it occassionaly and will know how to deal with it.

Regards,

Roger
