Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Pennsylvania

defamation or slander

I applied for a job at a local law enforcement agency, when I went for my interview, they asked if i could work with a bad back? I never had a back injury. When i asked who told them this, they actually told me it was my last employer. I was off on a medical leave (last year) and he terminated me. My guess is he is holding a big grudge. Anyway, I hired a lawyer and he called the agency where I interviewed and they denied the whole thing, saying, ''we have no idea what you're talking about''. Then, I actually had one of the officers come up to me and said, ''I heard they said you have a bad back, but they didn't tell me directly, one of my supervisors did. The officer believes they are lying so they have no involvement in the case. Anyway, I never heard back from the lawyer I hired. I paid him $75 consultation fee, plus a $500 retainer fee. He wrote my ex-employer one letter and that was it! Do I have a case here? and can I get my retainer fee back from this deadbeat or a portion of it? I wrote him a letter also and still no replies!! I am in a really bad place here!! Also, I am still unemployed, I cannot even get an interview, it has been about 1.5 years or so....someone please give me advice!!

Re: defamation or slander

If they told one person that, they likely told other potential employers too. You need to get one to cooperate with you in going after your former employer.
