Wrongful imprisonment/detention

Is it legally possible to sue a municipality or official thereof for negligently incarcerating someone or are police/sheriffs/district attorneys etc. protected from such lawsuits?

Public officials have limited immunity from suit. If they have acted negligently in their duties (as opposed to intentionally, say) then it is essentially impossible to recover damages from them.
