can employer tell you who you can associate with?

i work for a newspaper(as a warehouse worker.) i was told i can't be friendly with the carriers. how can they tell me who i can or can't be nice to or associate with especailly if i am off the clock and not even discussing work things?

You asked if an employer can tell you who to associate with.

Yes and no. The problem the employer has is that they do not want any kind of inside dealing between a carrier and a warehouseman. For example, if a warehouseman threw an extra stack to their friend every day it would increase the sales to the carrier and harm the bottom line of the paper.

But no, generally an employer cannot proscribe off premises, off hours conduct.
