Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

Canceling Lease before it begins

A lease was signed for an apartment and 720.00 dollars was given as security deposit. The lease is to begin On 3/01/02. A govenment program (which was applied for and of which I was put onto a list) finally came through and I was able to get a low income rental. I went to landlord and explaned what happened (today 2/20/02) and asked to cancel the pending lease and get a refund of the security deposit. I was told ''no'' that I would not be getting the security deposit back. Can this legally be done since the lease does not even take affect until 3/01/02?

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Canceling Lease before it begins

This really depends on the terms of your lease and security agreement, most landlords are flexible on this option and will offer a partial if not full refund. If the landlord refuses I would consult an attorney.
