small claims, we defaulted, what are our rights

a small claims suit was filed against us for 1500.00 we recieved the court papers with a trial date, didnt realize we had to respond... the court and the plaintiff lawyer said we defaulted and had to pay the full amount by 4/26/01. we dont have the full amout to pay and offed to settle they declined. do we have any rights to either make payments to the plaintiff, is there any thing we can do ???

Please help if you can or tell me who or where to go next
