Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Tennessee

Bigamy

If my husband is still married to his first wife, and he then married me without a divorice from the first one. And if anything happens to him does she have to legal right to come in and take everything we have. Because all of the vehicles and everything we own is in just his name. He never even put my name on his checking account. I left one time and took the car and he called the police and reported me for auto theft. Just what are my legal rights and how do I resolve something that has been bothering me for years. Every time I bring it up he keeps telling me it doesn't matter. That our marriage is legal. Please help for a peace of mind. Thank you for your time.

Re: Bigamy

You are in a delicate legal situation. You need professional advice. This is not the place. Contact a family law or domestic relations attorney in your town at once. Your bar association will provide recommendations if you don't know any lawyers. You have substantial rights at stake. Preliminary consultation with most lawyers is done at no charge. Get advice promptly.

Re: Bigamy

No, your marriage is not legal if your husband was married at the time and never bothered to get a divorce. You say you have been with him for years, but you let him put everything in his name -- including the car and house? That sounds unusually foolish. You took the car, and he called the police on you? It sounds like a horrible relationship. If anything happened to your husband, absent a will to the contrary, his spouse (first wife) would inherit from him under Tennessee law.

You need to get out of that relationship as soon as possible.
