I recently got a collection letter from a check company saying I had a return check in Sept. of 1997 now they keep calling me to pay and was wanting to know is there a time frame they have to go by since its 8 years ago?

Tennessee has a six-year statute of limitations on breach of contract; writing a check that was dishonored could be considered a breach. This debt is 8 years old. You should contact the debt collection agency and ask why the agency feels it has not violated the federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act by asking you to pay on a debt that has expired by the statute of limitations. Maybe the agency could explain an alternative theory why it feels it has a right to collect. Otherwise, you may be able to sue the collection agency for violating your rights.
