Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

can they do this

app. 15 years ago I gave custody of my child to my parents. the father of my child also signed papers. In the papers it said that we were both relieved of any rights or responsibilities. My mother then got afdc on this child. Now the state of tenn. is taking me to court for back support & future support. They are also trying to make me pay the state back the afdc. Can they do this?

Unless a COURT terminated your parental rights and responsibilities, the state can go after you for back support.... but it is possible you could also go after your mother for contribution since she had caused you to believe you would owe nothing... at the same time, from what you are saying, it sounds like even if a court did give you a judgement against your mother, she would likely not have any money to pay it off.
