My suggestion is to demand a copy of the insurance policy, and read it very carefully. See if there is an exclusion for injuries caused by pets. You have a number of options, but keep in mind that there are procedural rules that set out certain time constraints and deadlines. If a lawsuit has been filed as you state in your post, then you are likely going to have to answer the complaint whether the insurance co. provides you an attorney, you hire private counsel or represent yourself. Do not allow a default judgment to be taken while you work out the insurance issue.
