in tennessee what is the minimum amount to designate to a relative so the will will not be contested

There is no minimum except for the spouse of the person making the will. If you want to avoid a contest, say something like, "I've not forgotten Alice and hereby leave her $1.00." For the spouse usually the spouse gets a childs share but no less than 1/3 of the estate.
