Legal Question in Consumer Law in Texas

Illegal cut-off?

I forgot to pay my electric bill three months ago. The following month, I paid in full the current and previous amounts owed - a day past the due date. A notice was sent out before that date to disconnect my electricity but I get my bills online, so I don't read the postage paid mail. 30 days later (I'm paid in full, remember) my electricity gets cut off. I call, thinking it was just a power outage and am asked to pay the previous amount plus some extra charges. I do. The next day, I check my bank statement and it showed I was indeed paid up. I called TXU and they told me they couldn't stop the disconnect order (30 days old). Plus any additional payments I made would be credited to future bills. Plus, it would take 24 to 48 hours to be reconnected. I had to sleep in an 82 degree apartment and all my food has spoiled. What recourse do I have, if any?

Contact the state PUC board -- there is a consumer liasion that assists in resolving disputes like this, prior to taking legal action.
