Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Debt collectors are trying to collect a UK debt in the US

I have received a letter from a debt collector attempting to collect a personal loan I had with a British bank. I defaulted on this loan over 12 months ago. I have no way to pay. What can the debt collectors do to me, other than send me letters asking for payment? Do they have any legal power in the US, being as the loan was taken out in the UK and signed under English law? Thanks.

If the original debt was legal under UK law, and under Texas law, and they want to domesticate it, they can in a Texas court. Once it is registered, they can enforce it as if it were a Texas debt. You would have to be notified of the proceedings. A civil debt can only be enforced under the Texas law here, and it would attach only to non-exempt property.
