Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Department of education vs paid loan

I borrowed $2000 student loan, and soon after I graduated, relocated and was not able to arrange for payment, but IRS withheld my incom tax returns for many years to offset my loan. Now after 15 years I have been contacted by a collection agency and they are charging me $25,000 for interest and other fees for the $2000 loan I have already paid. I have a few payment records, which I obtained from US department of education. How can I resolve this?

Thank you.

Re: Department of education vs paid loan

If you can't prove you paid it, you're going to be out of luck. Obviously, some body lost the payment records or IRS never transferred the payments. Can you contact IRS? Maybe their records go back that far. You could make an Open Records Request. Good Luck.
