Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I am trying to get custody of my grandson who has lived with me his entire life. His mother has been in and out of his life. I live in Amarillo Tx and legal aid will not help me due to being short staffed. How do I find a lawyer who will help me and can I file for custody without a lawyer?

One option would be to apply to a probate court for guardianship of the child. This would enable you to take care of the child while mom is away. The downside is that you would have to make annual reports to the court.

Grandparents have limited rights under the family code.

In any event, I suggest you find an attorney in your area that practices both guardianship and family law. An important piece of information is how long mom has left the child with you.

Also what about the child's father?
