Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Property rights(unmarried)

I helped my ''ex-boyfriend'' purchase a car. I co-signed for him and they ended up putting my name first on the title because his credit. Since then, I have gotten married and totally lost contact with him. I am getting phone calls and notices that he hasn't paid the car note in over at least 157 days and notices about parking tickets he's getting. The credit company was trying to repo the car but couldn't find it(I think he's in Louisiana). I want to get my name cleared so that I don't have warrants in my name but I don't think I can report it to the police as stolen or missing because my name is on it. What can I do?

You can take your name off the car title much easier than off the promissory note. If you want to make a gift to him of the car, you can record the change in title at your local tax appraiser's office. Taking your name off the title will solve some of the problems you mentioned, but won't help with the loan. The lender is not likely to let you take your name off the note, so you will have to make the car payments. The car is your property at this time, and if your boyfriend took it without your permission, you can file a police report. So you will have to decide whether it was truly stolen from you or a gift that you gave him. As far as the payments, he is in breach of a contract with you, and if you can find him, you could sue him. There are many private investigators and internet sites that may help you locate him.
