Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

Defamation of Character

My husband is a realtor and for the past year has had another agent make slanderous remarks about him to other agents and title companies. The person making the remarks has known my husband for many years and they had a falling out about a year ago. The comments have becoming increasingly malicious, but have been limited to his personal feelings about my husband. However, he recently told a client of my husband's that his success was not a result of his real estate work, but that he was a ''major drug dealer in town,'' and that he was ''very concerned'' about the client doing business with my husband. Aside from reporting it and filing a claim with the realtors' association (the other person is a realtor also), what can my husband do to stop this person and preserve his reputation in a business based largely upon it?

Re: Defamation of Character

Your husband can sue him for defamation. The law will not put a muzzle on the speaker, but can make him pay.
