What does Trail on Merits in a civil case mean and what are the procedures?

"Trial on the merits" means the final trial.

You go to court at the appointed time, and the Judge calls the case. The two (or more) parties announce "ready" or "not ready." If the Judge decides that the trial will proceed, then he tells the moving party to call his first witness.

After all the evidence has been heard, the Judge makes his decision.
