Obtaining fair compensation for injuries received in an 18-wheeler accident can be tricky. Many trucking companies are "self-insured," meaning they have no liability insurance and you must deal with their "risk management" department. Sometimes the driver is employed by a company other than the company that owns the tractor, trailer, and/or cargo. Wading through whom you should make a claim against and how is a job best delegated to a competent personal injury attorney. I would advise that you speak with an attorney BEFORE you attempt to contact the trucking company and before they contact you. Do not under any circumstances give a statement to anyone (other than the police and your attorney), either in person or over the telephone. And remember, the other side has no incentive to pay you anything. It is likely that only a competent attorney can get you the compensation you truly deserve.
