Legal Question in Personal Injury in Texas

broken appliance

not sure if i have the right area of law, but just a quick question....my roommate was given an old coffee maker, about six years old, by his father. It never worked right, however it just recently stopped working all together. It is proven to just be old and worn out. My roommate blames me though because I am the last person to make coffee in it and I am to buy him a new coffee maker. Since this could cost me around fifty dollars, I was curious if I was liable for this since this coffee maker itself would probably be only worth a dollar today.

Re: broken appliance

Absent some type of special agreement regarding your use of the coffee pot, and assuming that you had authority to use it, you would be liable only if you were negligent in your use of the coffee pot, and then only to the extent of its value. The coffee pot already had lived beyond its normal useful expected life. Just give him a dollar, and get a new room mate.
