Legal Question in Disability Law in Virginia

My sister's son is thirty some years old. He lives with her,but is mentally ill, destroying property in the house,everyone is afraid of him. He does work each day. She is not sure what she can do except have him arrested. They just found knives in his car. He sats and read a map for hours.what legal advice can you give us as far taking neccessary steps?

Your sister's son may need to be committed to a state facility such as Western State Hospital (if he's found to be a danger to himself and/or others).

The process governing involuntary commitment in the Commonwealth can be found at Va. Code Sections 37.2-809-820, and in the situation described would likely be initiated by the filing of a petition with the clerk's office of the local general district court in the jurisdiction where your sister and her son currently reside.
