Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Virginia

Paying a large auto repair bill right before filing bankruptcy

I have been seriously considering bankruptcy although I am still current on all bills other than medical. The transmission just went out on my car an will cost $1500 to repair. Can I not pay my mortgage (since I plan on surrendering the house in bankruptcy)and pay for the repair of my car. The car is 10 years old and I assume would be exempt in a chapter 7. It's only worth about $2,000 but I can't buy another car and need transportation.

Should be no problem, provided you pay the car repair cost concurrently with having the work done. Don't do it on credit (either credit by card or by letting them bill you later). But discuss the details of the whole situation with your bankruptcy lawyer to be sure.
