Legal Question in Technology Law in Virginia

Email Crime

Hi,

Someone is constantly changing my yahoo email password and I believe is reading my private emails. Since Dec 01 2008 until today this person has changed my yahoo password and got access to my account 3 times, I was how ever to able to change my password using the secert string i set with yahoo. I am sure this person will change my password again. Is there any way i can findout who this person is and what is the procedure to file a legal action and who can help me do that.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Thanks,

Pooja

Re: Email Crime

If the folks at Yahoo.com have not been able to discover who this clandestine email snooper might be, I don't know who could.

Re: Email Crime

The Electronic Communications Protection Act of 1986 prohibits the intentional and nonconsensual interception of any wire, oral or electronic communication, the unauthorized access of stored communications, or the disclosure or use of any information from an illegally intercepted communication. It may be illegal, but the fact remains that email and the world wide web are not secure from password hacking that has occurred with you. Typically, a person can hack your Yahoo! email account by resetting the password and entering certain information about you including date of birth, address with zip code, and another question, like where did you meet your spouse. If you do a google search with the terms "Yahoo" and "Palin", you'll find hundreds of articles on how Palin's personal Yahoo! email was hacked. If you want to keep your email address the same, then I recommend that you (1) reset your password and (2) immediately update your Yahoo! profile with a random zip code -- a zip code that no one else but you would think of (you'll have to figure out how you can remember). In addition, you may want to (3) set up an alert on your Yahoo! email to notify those that are sending you an email that someone has been accessing your emails and not to send any confidential material. Finally, you may just want to set up a completely new email account and select unusual profile questions as well as a fake address.

And, if this person that is hacking your email uses it to send an email to someone else then you might be able to find out an IP address associated with the person. . .

Good luck,

Bambi
