Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia

Vehicle Title

I purchased a vehicle in 1996, paid it off in 1999 and have never received a title, we can not locate the lien holder their number is not in service, all we have is the check, and a promise from them to send the title. There are no liens against this vehicle, and there have not been for years.

Re: Vehicle Title

Contact DMV to determine whether the lienholder

authorized a release of the lien for DMV records

when the note was payed off, and whether DMV has a last known address for the company that is different from the one you have.

If there is such an address, you should make another attempt to contact the company to secure the title. If no such address exists or your

renewed efforts still do not produce the title,

then contact the DMV, explain the situation, and request that a replacement title be issued for

the vehicle and sent to you. (You may need to attach to your request a copy of the payoff check

and the company's promise to send you the title.)
