Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

garnishing my social security check

my only income is my widows benefits for my child and I. I recieved a garnishment letter and the bank is going to put a freeze on my bank account, since it is an direct deposit. If this is the only income can they do this what else can they take or make me sell? Can they make me sell a vechicle even if the debit is a credit card and the car wasn't purchased on the card. Exactly what are my rights?

Re: garnishing my social security check

If the credit card company has received a valid judgment against you, in theory, any of your assets of any substantial worth, including your vehicle as well as bank account funds, are subject to attachment or levy.

You could request that the Social Security Adminstration no longer directly deposit your check in that particular bank account but, rather, send it to you directly.
