Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

I am a mental health counselor and I consulted on a legal case. The lawyer contacted me and asked me to consult on the case. I discussed my fee for services with the lawyer. Then, the lawyer consulted with her client. The lawyer emailed me back and wrote that the client authorized me to perform my services (for my established fee). My services ended in January 2012 but today (November 2012) I have not received payment (about $3,500) for my services and the client will not return my emails. I am thinking of pursuing this matter in small claims court but I am first wondering the following: Is the client ultimately responsible for payment or is the lawyer (who arranged my services) responsible for paying me for my services?

The client unless the attorney agreed to personally guarantee

payment of your fee (my opinion). Like the lawyer very likely did, you

would've been well advised to have demanded payment of your

"established fee" upfront (or some significant portion thereof) before

you began rendering services in behalf of this client.
