Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

If you have given a school insitution notice that you can't pay your bill on time, yet they send you a letter in the mail, saying you are deliquent and they will but you on the credit bureau list. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Your agreement to at least send them something on the bill might persuade them to hold off on whatever they're threatening.
