Legal Question in DUI Law in Virginia

Arraigned but still no lawyer

I was recently charged with DUI and had my bail hearing and arraignment at once via video court. It has been about 4-5 weeks since and I am still trying to come up with the finaces to hire an lawyer and my trial date is nearing closer. What can I do to get more time?? Can I as a citizen request a continuous? Can the judge still convict me if I request a lawyer but havent found one yet?

Re: Arraigned but still no lawyer

Yes, you as a defendant(as well as a citizen) have a right to request a continuance in your criminal case. Such a first time request is nearly regarded as a matter of right.

Just go to the clerk's office of the traffic court

which is handling the matter and tell the clerk you need more time to secure an attorney and are requesting another date (later)for your hearing.
