Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Child Custody

I am a single mother who moved to Florida 1 year ago to go to Motorcycle Mechanics School. Prior to going to school I gave my mother custody of my daughter so that she could take care of her and put her under her medical benefits. School didnt work out for me and now I want my daughter back but my mom refuses to return custody to me. Unlike my mother, I cant afford an attorney and I dont want to have to take her to court but I fear I may not have a choice. What options do I have and what do I need to do to get my daughter back?

Re: Child Custody

See if you can qualify for a low cost or no cost to you attorney from the local legal services agency in the area where your child is being improperly detained by your mother.

This person will be able to assist you in getting the proper papers filed with the local Juvenile & Domestic relations Court to have the child returned to you. If for some reason you can't get any legal assistance to help you with this matter, then just go to the clerk's office and ask for the papers required to file for custody.

Then fill them out and leave them with the clerk.

(If you're puzzled about how to complete certain blanks, ask the clerks for help although in some instances they'll tell you that they're not allowed to dispense what might be interpreted as legal advice.)
