Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

legally obtaining court papers

Do I have a legal right to request and recieve from the court system a copy of a paper i filed with them.Specifically, i filed an ''answer'' with the court stating why I would not sign divorce papers served to me,and would like a copy of that filing.Does the court clerk have to give it to me if I request it?

Re: legally obtaining court papers

Certainly, the file is suppose to be considered a public record and any party involved in the court case should be able to get a copy of any document contained in the court's file. (You may, of course, have to pay a nominal fee for the copying.)
