Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Payday regulations.

My wife's employer agrees to pay her employees every two weeks but is consistently late, sometimes as much as a week and a half. She was recently confronted with the issue from one employee who simply needs the money on time, without delay and she was given the excuse that her employer does her banking everyday and sees that no one cashes their check immediately so why should she make an attempt to be on time with her payroll. My question is, is there a state or federal regulation that holds her to making sure that her employees are paid on time, everytime, or is this just an unfortunate situation that these people have to deal with?

Yes, there are state and federal wage and hour laws which govern these matters and, if the employees wished to make a complaint to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, they could certainly do so. (But it might create more trouble than it solves for a situation like the one you've described which appears to involve a small company with limited assets.)
