How far in advance is a thirty day notice?

I am currently renting a townhouse from aprivate owner, my one year lease was over on 8/31/06 and I am now on a month to month, I put in my 30day notice on 8/31/06 to vacate the premises on 09/30/06 my landlord says that with a thirty day notice that I turned in on 8/31/06 I am suppose to stay until 10/31/06 is this true and am I legally liable to pay Octobers rent sice i will be out on or before 09/30/06

It would be best to see the original written lease. In general, If you give 30 days notice on 8/31 that you are terminanting the lease 9/30--you have given the required notice. Again, the written lease may say otherwise.
