Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Landlord Filed Bankcruptcy

I had rented this house before we moved from Indiana to Virginia. The lease was signed in Feb. 2008.

The landlord emailed me saying that they have filed bankcruptcy and that we should contact the morgage company for our options. My questions are:

Should we pay them the rent or wait till a decision is made by the court.

What are my options about moving. I had moved from Indiana and needed some time to save some money and buy a home for me and the family. Now I have to move.

What will happen to my security deposit? Who will be responsible for fixing the house as per lease.

Please let me know what my options are. I have a family of 4 and it is hard to go and look for a house.

Thank you.

Re: Landlord Filed Bankcruptcy

It would seem that the landlord has pointed you in the right direction of contacting the mortgage company for instructions, now that the landlord has filed for bankruptcy. And, it would not appear advisable to be paying any rent monies to the landlord at this time. And, the mortgagor should be able to further advise you on this and other issues related to your lease.
