Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I lived with a friend and she broke her conditions of our lease. I did sign a sheet of paper for her new landlord saying she wasn't responsible for the rent at our residence as of May 1st. Well, the agreement was I keep the security deposit. Well, now she has recinded this and wants half. The owner/landlord will not write the check out to just one of us. I am moving out of state and she is in another home in Virginia. He also said he is going to mail it and whoevers forwarding address it ends up at is where it'll go. I find this unfair and want to know how I can receive this security deposit as I fulfilled my part of the rental agreement.

You could sue this friend in small claims court. However, if you

don't have the time for that, then you'll apparently have to rely on this

friend's sense of basic honesty--if she has any--to do the right thing.
