Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

A man is living in my spare room, is not a relative, boyfriend, lover or husband. I want him to move out. He does not pay rent and this situation was supposed to be temporary. We did not have a written rental agreement. This is a private residence. Do I have to serve him a formal eviction notice and is he entitled to 30 days notice if he is not paying rent? He does do some yard work, but only if he feels like it! Help!

Yes, in the situation you've described, you will most likely have to go

through the standard eviction procedures at your local general district court required of any landlord who wants to evict a noncompliant tenant even though from your perspective neither of these terms actually describe

yourself or this man now occupying your "spare room".
