Rent Refund Question

We recently signed a lease addendum changing our termination date from 15 July to May 23 (we bought a new home and wanted to move out early) We found the new tenant and showed them the home. They were very clear they wanted to move in as soon as possible. Landlord well advised of situation. We paid the full May's monthly rent. Addendum states payment of $690.00. Landlord is claiming holding the excess paid rent with deposit. We already have 2 months rent in escrow which is max by VA law. Can they legally hold our rent overpayment?

I must admit that I have no idea whatsoever based upon your confusing and apparently confused(at least from my perspective) recitation of the relevant facts pertaining to this matter.

Notwithstanding, all of the foregoing, however,(as certain lawyers are wont to say), it is true that rental agreements(leases) covered by the Virginia Residential Landlord Tenant Act(VRLTA) do limit security deposits which landlords may require of tenants to no more than two months rent.
