Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

30 vs 60 day notice on intent to vacate

Our lease was due to expire Mar 31. We found out Feb 15 that we were required to give 60 days notice. We gave notice on Feb 24th. Is there a state law that requires 60 days or is it 30 days notice? Do we have the legal right to leave when lease expires Mar 31 because we have given more than 30 days notice?

Re: 30 vs 60 day notice on intent to vacate

Depends on the terms of the lease. Some require notice to renew (in which case it automatically expires at the end of the term); others require notice not to renew, otherwise it renews automatically.
