Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Power of Attorney

A friend of mine is in a foreign country. She would like to sell her condo. She wants me to have power of attorney for her. I am not an attorney, and have no legal training. Apart from that fact, I would feel comfortable with that responsibility. Do I need to be an attorney or have a law degree to accept power of attorney for her?

Re: Power of Attorney

You do not need to be an attorney nor have attended law school to exercise a power of attorney function. This legal instrument makes the one upon whom it is conferred what's called an "attorney in fact" who is then legally empowered to carry out a specialized legal task (usually) for someone else which in your case would be selling a friend's condo and making appropriate disposition of the proceeds from the sale.
