Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

I bought a car from a wholesaler who buys cars from auto auctions and sells them to individuals. I was in the state of MD when I made the purchase. When I bought the car, I got the car, I was given a temporary registration and the temporary plates were already on the car. The temporary plates were Delaware plates. I got pulled over by the police in Arlington, VA and he said that I had counterfeit plates and I asked him how. My tags are legit, I have a valid GA driver's license and I have temporary registration to go with the vehicle. The officer stated if I made the purchase in MD then I should've had MD tags, but I had no idea of this. He said the tags were not given to me by the Delaware DMV. The police took the tags, and had my car towed to a holding facility. They did not impound my car. I was able to go pick my car up the next day and park it at my sisters house. I now have to appear in court and the case is for Counterfeit license plate. What is the seriousness of this case, what can happen and how can I beat this. I have a secret clearance and don't want to lose it.
