Re: Third Degree Theft

The maximum is 365 in jail, but on a first offense judges rarely impose any where near that amount. There are also diversion programs and alternative sentencing programs, not to mention a civil compromise, as a means of avoiding jail. Your biggest problem is that a conviction may effect your immigration status. A conviction of a crime is grounds for deportation, denial of admission and denial of naturalization. You need to make sure you hire an attorney with some resources in immigration consequences of criminal convictions. Feel free to contact my office for further advice. Do not under any circumstances try to deal with this by yourself.

Re: Third Degree Theft

You should hire a lawyer as this charge, a crime of moral turpitude, can impact your profession and your immigration. Ideally you want a lawyer who works in both criminal defense and immigration. I do both so if you'd like further assistance contact me directly.
