getting a job

HI i shoplifted 64 worth of merchandise last month and I am going to court on the 27 of may. This is my first offense and I am a good student with a promising career ahead. I never have a job and school is my main focus. I know what i did was wrong but i do not want this stupid mistake to ruin my future. So my question is, if the court grant me a diversion and put me on probation, will my crime show up on my record while i'm on probation? My plan is to get a job in the summer and volunteer at a hospital. I filled out an application to the hospital and they told me they are going to check my record. I am really scared and do not want this to drag my career behind. So what is the best possible way to deal with this situation so it won't go on record and I won't have to worry about not getting a job? Thank you.

A diversion agreement typically requires that certain rights be waived, e.g. trial, jury,. While such a disposition may be beneficial, it is best to consider all of your options and to have an attorney review the case for legal issues and whether there is sufficient evidence to obtain a conviction.

The fact that you have been charged with the crime will be on your record until sealed. If convicted, or even if you successfully complete a diversion program, anyone will be able to view the file and see an admission of guilt (typically part of a diversion).

Hire a lawyer or apply for a public defender. Get competent advice on the strengths and weaknesses of the case and understand all of your options.
