The short answer is yes. However, there are limitations that are considered reasonable. You cannot use objects or shake a person, strikes to the head are unacceptable. Anything that leaves visible marks may get you into trouble. The law says it is okay if the marks are transitory but then everyone (Prosecutor, Judge, Defense) argue about what is transitory.
