Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

Concerned

In the state of Washington you are an ''at-will'' employee. I had an interview today at a company where an old employee of my current company works. I know the old employee is still in communication with my current boss. Would he have grounds for terminating me because I went on a job interview?

Re: Concerned

Absent a contract (either between you and the employer, or a more general collective bargaining agreement) you can indeed for terminated for any reason or no reason at all, so long as it is not an illegal reason. It would not be illegal for him to terminate you because you were out looking.

If he is still on speaking terms with the other employee at the new company, perhaps he will not take your jobhunting as worthy of termination, however. I'll keep a good thought for you.
