Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

My state department labor & industries web site says my coworkers and I have the right to paid break & meal periods. But my employer says they don't have to recognize those rights because headquarters is in a different state.

Are we legally entitled to paid break & meal periods?

Most likely neither you nor the employer understands exactly what is being said. I know of no reason why you would be entitled to paid break and meal periods myself, but that doesn't mean such a right doesn't exist for you. Where HQ is located is rarely relevant. It matters, MAYBE, for some tax purposes. Employee protection laws are designed to...wait for it... protect employees. If the State has jurisdiction over you and the business (e.g. you're working within the state lines) then that State can demand whatever protections it wants (very general statement that might not apply to you).
