Legal Question in Personal Injury in Washington

illgal detainment

Upon completing my purchases at the check stand in a major chain store I proceded to the door, with all items properly bagged, and was stopped by an employee demanding proof of purchase. When I stated there was no probable cause for a stop and tried to leave I was physically detained. I believe this constitutes illegal detainment and a violation of civil rights.

Re: illgal detainment

Sounds like Costco. So did you show them a receipt? Did you have a receipt?

You appear to be confusing government action with private action. A store can do what it wishes to prevent you from stealing from them.

They may find themselves liable for the manner in which they treat you, but you give no suggestion that they mistreated you.
