Domestic violence injunctions have devastating consequences upon one's future, including adversely affecting your future employability and your right to possess a weapon. In WI, public records of domestic violence litigation (as well as most other types of litigation) are readily available to the general public, so anyone who locate it can secretly consider it for any purposes they wish. The same applies to criminal convictions stemming from the same course of events, including disorderly conduct which is labeled as "domestic." A huge additional fine, known as a "domestic violence assesment," will also generally be assessed in any such criminal case. Highly publicized cases of violence in the workplace and in various other public locations has made employers and various other officials overly cautious once a person has a domestic violence litigation history. You can therefore expect to be singled out for many different types of adverse discriminatory treatment in the future. You therefore owe it to yourself to retain an experienced criminal lawyer any time you become involved in such matters. With proper representation, it is even possible to defeat the injunction request at trial if it is poorly supported by testimony. My comments in this public web forum are intended only for public educational purposes and not as legal advice for you. You therefore should retain your own attorney as soon as possible, since time limits can apply to many different types of legal matters which could severely harm your case if they expire without receiving proper attention in a timely fashion. However, you are also welcome to contact me at my office in Racine if you wish to discuss this matter further.
