Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

I'm in the process of doing one of those home dna paternity kits for a child that is believed to be mine. The child was born in Va, but the mother now lives in Ct and I live in AL. Also another guy is listed as the farther on the birth certificate and she also carries his last name. So if the dna test proves the child is mine what steps should I take to have parental rights over her?

If the mother and father on the birth certificate were never married, then file a paternity suite and ask for visitation or custody.
