Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Arizona

Claiming the house on Taxes

I own a home with my now ex-boyfriend. We hold the home as joint tenants with right of survivorship. We both pay half of the mortgage and utilities. Which one of us can claim the house on our taxes? We cannot agree on who gets to claim it.

He makes about $20K more than I do and feels he should claim the home because he will get more back. There is not much equity in the home, since we just bought it in May.

More than likely he will go behind my back and claim the home (we do not get along well); if he does claims the home, is there a way I can make him pay me half of what he gets back from the home?

Thank you for your help!

This is a tax question, not a real property question. You should resubmit your question and choose tax as the area of law.
